Who We Are

Timbergreens Farm, operated by Marcus Leandro Rodrigo in Downey, California, represents a commitment to sustainable forestry practices. Our carefully managed approach focuses on maximizing the growth and health of forests through responsible harvesting.

We operate on a selective harvesting model essentially "skimming the cream" by removing only trees that are dead, dying, or crowding others. This methodology ensures that our forests remain healthy, productive, and vibrant for generations to come.

Timbergreen was the first forestry consulting firm in the Lake States to pass the FSC standard and attain SmartWood certification a milestone that reflects our enduring dedication to environmental stewardship.

Our Vision

Forests Thriving for the Next Century

"A forest is not a commodity to be consumed it is a living legacy to be cultivated. Every tree we leave standing is an investment in the world our children will inherit."

At Timbergreens, we envision a future where forests across North America reach their full ecological and economic potential managed not by extraction, but by intelligent stewardship. Through our Full Vigor Forestry model, we are proving that a forest can grow richer, stronger, and more valuable with each passing decade while still yielding a sustainable timber harvest every year.

Our long-term goal is to expand cooperative forest management across the Lake States, empowering thousands of private landowners to become active guardians of their woodlands supported by certified practices, shared infrastructure, and a market that rewards quality over speed.

Our Core Principles

🌲

Our Philosophy

We believe in balancing extraction with forest regeneration. Timbergreen's Full Vigor Forestry system works to build a fully stocked forest of high quality large trees, then harvests just the natural annual production to keep the best trees growing with good vigor.

Using FVF principles, the annual growth of a forest can be doubled within 20 years with each selective harvest producing better and better quality timber as time moves forward.

🎯

Our Goal

To maximise forest health and natural growth while delivering real economic value. We work with forest owners to develop management programs they understand and believe in programs guided by the community, the environment, and long-term economic returns.

The Forest Stewardship Council stresses that forest management must consider community benefits, environmental protection and restoration, as well as the economic returns of all operations and so do we.

✂️

Our Practice

Selective removal of dead, dying, and crowded trees is at the heart of everything we do. We carefully assess each woodland before any harvesting takes place, identifying the exact trees whose removal will most benefit the wider forest ecosystem.

Low-impact logging machines, horse logging, and radio-controlled winches mean our operations leave the forest floor and the surrounding habitat virtually undisturbed.

The Cooperative Movement

The Sustainable Forestry Cooperative movement has caught the attention of many landowners across Washington Island, Wisconsin. Timbergreen has been involved in several forest owner meetings, a low-impact logging demonstration field day, and has installed flooring in two homes on the Island showing the final product available from cooperative management.

Washington Island covers approximately 20,000 acres, with around 8,000 acres of forest. Our estimate is that the forest resource is currently 80% underutilised. Assuming 60% of landowners participate, that would total about 5,000 acres of forest capable of producing 1,000,000 board feet per year in the first phase alone.

🌍

European Precedent

In Northern Europe, forest owner cooperatives have thrived for over 50 years. In Finland, nearly all forest owners now belong to a cooperative. We estimate that within 5 years, a cooperative on Washington Island would attract 60% of woodlot owners.

🏭

Value-Added Products

Hardwood flooring and kiln dry lumber have been the best products at Timbergreen for 12 years. Beech, maple, oak, birch, ash, and cedar from Washington Island are all highly valuable. Creative processing and direct marketing could generate over $5,000,000 per year in gross sales.

🎓

Education & Training

A school forest, demonstration site for visitors, forestry conference centre, and logger training programmes are all part of our vision. This Island is a perfect place for a demonstration and training centre with huge demand for practical, common sense forestry education.

🌿

Non Timber Products

Beyond timber, forest cooperatives also produce mushrooms, herbal and medicinal plants, and maple syrup. The rich soils in Island forests are suitable for many alternative crops, involving people of varied interests in the cooperative.
